Finding "Enough" 04/01/2010

“I don’t have enough time, enough money, enough energy...”  More and more, it seems this broken record of scarcity spins us into a web of endless complaints.  I’m ashamed to admit I’ve even put energy into proving these complaints are true in my life, as if having less time, money, and energy makes me “cool” or something.

Let’s be authentic, here.  What possibly could be cool about proving I don’t have enough?  I’ll tell you exactly what – my scarcity mantra is serving a purpose, and that purpose is to justify my unhappiness.  Otherwise, I’d have to take responsibility for my life and do something about being unhappy.  Living in scarcity provides a safety net.  I avoid responsibility by convincing myself I cannot control the cause of my unhappiness.

What if we were to consider we have too much?  Sure, it’s clear we have excess in the physical realm: cars, shoes, even toilets.  Luckily, the annual arrival of warm air brings with it newfound energy to dust the hard-to-reach shelves, open the windows, and make that trip to Goodwill.  Without some variation of “spring cleaning” now and then, our physical environments would suffocate us.

Now let’s consider we carry around too much stuff on the inside.  A lifetime of limiting beliefs and rigid expectations fills us to the brim.  Yet, we don’t often give this overflow the same attention.  Cleaning out the mental and spiritual clutter that no longer serves us can liberate us in unimaginable ways.  Spring cleaning within the Self manifests in the external world as more time, energy, and space, both literally and emotionally.  With this new space, we begin experiencing bits of inner and outer peace – and from here, we can continue on the path back to authentic happiness, where enough of everything always exists.

Is it time for you to do some “inner spring cleaning?”  Would you like to experience what having enough feels like in all areas of your life?
