My nephew turned 4 about two weeks ago and I was invited to his birthday party which was a two hour drive - one way. (Driving is one of my least favorite things.) These parties are crowded and I kept telling myself that little Nick would not care if I did not show up. I had missed his sister's party a few weeks earlier so I knew I had to suck it up and go. When I got there Nick was outside playing and, even though I had parked several houses away, he spotted me as soon as I got out of my car. He yelled my name and came running up to me with a big hug. Awwww ... acknowledgement from a 4 year old that he is grateful that I came to visit and that I am someone special to him. Sweet.

Sunday at a busy, small island airport - packed with twitchy New Yorkers anxious to hop on their Jet Blue home - the ticketing agent that I was speaking with said, "Do you mind if I take a minute to make an announcement? people seem very anxious." I said, no of course not. She announced clear directions and what they could expect to happen in the next few minutes in terms of security and boarding. It was like everyone in the terminal took a deep inhale and exhale. When she returned to me I praised her for her total coolness and for creating a cool environment. We all felt great, me included.

Angela,
Wow! What a great example of the "happy" we are born with... four year-olds certainly are not intentionally withholding acknowledgment or too lazy to speak up, right? Thank you SO much for sharing this - really refreshing.

Ann,
Thank you for sharing your experience. You witnessed the impact the airline employee's actions had on all in the environment. And what impacts do you think your acknowledgment had on her, you, the travlers, and all who are affected by them? We are powerful beyond our imagination!
